In 2009, the 123rd Wimbledon Championships will see the unveiling of the retractable roof on Centre Court alongside increased capacity and more comfortable seats.
Retractable roof
The addition of the roof to the iconic Centre Court will ensure optimum conditions for tennis on grass as well as guaranteeing a full day's play. The roof allows natural light to reach the grass which will improve growing conditions, particularly at the southern end of the court. Players will also be safer with the waterproof roof offering protection from all adverse weather conditions.
Should the roof be required, play will be suspended whilst the operation is in progress. The process takes between 10-30 minutes depending on climatic conditions.
Superior capacity and comfort
Six extra rows of seating within the upper tier on three of the four sides will take Centre Court's capacity up from 13,800 to 15,000.
As well as easier access to the court, with more stairs and lifts, spectators will also feel the benefit of new wider seats.
